Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 Are Smaller and Improved All Around – but They Cost More
One ingredient could be these little wings-type things that the buds grew back this generation. They’re significantly smaller than typical earbud wings, but their function is the same: they complement the fit and make the buds tighter in your ears. They’re fully rubberized and feel comfortable against your concha.
However, the twist-to-adjust stabilizer is supposed to offer two separate kinds of fits. You can twist the buds in one direction to “lock [them] securely in your ear during workouts, or adjust the other way for all-day comfort.” Upon extensively twisting them in my ears, I didn’t feel the presence of two dedicated fit modes. The buds were either tight or not tight enough.

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 pack a lot of sound into a tiny space. Their biggest strength is sub-bass, which is rare to find in any quality in a pair of buds, let alone this good. And standard bass audio is also a big drawcard, bringing tracks like “Blinding Lights” (The Weeknd) and “Roygbiv” (Boards of Canada) to life in a way most buds simply can’t replicate. But despite this, they’re not tuned too far towards the bass end of the spectrum, so mids and trebles don’t come through muddy, which is a prevailing problem with bassy buds.
With the default EQ settings, high mids and low trebles were a little piercing to my ears, but this was easily fixed with one tiny tweak in the Pixel Buds app’s treble slider, located within the Sound menu.

They have solid battery life, good EQ adjustments, a full suite of playback controls and a comfortable, secure design. Most of the downsides are really just nitpicks or occasional glitches with the controls, except for poor multipoint performance. With the Pixel Buds Pro 2, Google introduced a handy new feature, giving the earbuds’ charging case a speaker of its own. This lets you use Find My Device to not just trigger individual earbuds to produce sound so you can track them down, but also to locate the entire package when the earbuds are stowed away for charging.
Beyond just that, you can enable the Other alerts option in Case Sounds settings to get audio alerts for things like when the battery’s running low or when you pair with a new device. Today we’re cracking open version 1.0.709452546 of the Pixel Buds app for Android, and poking around the code within, we discover what looks like work to bring an additional case sound to the Buds Pro 2: an audio alert when your earbuds are properly docked in the case.
Google’s flagship buds stands out for its Gemini integration, lightweight and comfortable design, decent sound quality, and long battery life. Plus, if history is anything to go by, the Buds Pro 2 will only improve with time as Google rolls out updates to add new features and enhance existing ones.
