Nubia Z70 Ultra Review: Unique Design, and Stellar Battery Life

The Nubia Z70 Ultra is a phone that definitely stands out. It is a solid phone, with an unmistakable and unique rear design, which kind of reminds us of the quirky point-and-shoot cameras from more than a decade ago. That’s courtesy of the large camera assembly at the rear, which relies on a staggered camera design, bold colors, and two contrasting glass panels to stand out.

The rest of the phone employs a standard flat design. The satin-like aluminum frame is mostly flat but has minuscule chamfers just around the corners, which gives off a premium feel and makes this Nubia feel great in the hand.

Nubia also has a two-stage camera button on the side, which is in the correct place – take notes Apple, OPPO and whoever is planning to add one. I’ll be honest, I’ve used this two-stage camera button more than the software shutter button. The power button is in Nubia’s red color, which I absolutely love. And finally on the opposite side is a customizable button. This can be used to open the previous app, open a specific app or really anything else. It’s actually really nice to have here. And, of course, Nubia also has a USB-C port on the bottom, which supports up to 80W charging. Unlike a lot of other fast-charging smartphones, Nubia is doing USB-C to USB-C instead of USB-A for fast charging, which is safer and more universal, too.

As the latest evolution in nubia’s True Full-Screen Flagship Series, the nubia Z70 Ultra introduces groundbreaking advancements in both display and selfie technology. Featuring the world’s first 1.5K Ultra-clear True Full-Screen Display, the device achieves an impressive 430 PPI Pixel Density across both the main and under display areas. The screen incorporates a Full-Screen Blue Diamond arrangement, boasting a 144Hz Under Display Refresh Rate and a peak brightness of 2000 nits, ensuring vibrant clarity even in bright sunlight. The FIAA extreme compression wiring technology results in an exceptional 95.3% Screen-to-Body Ratio, while the integrated UDC Ultra Independent Display Chip enables pixel-level display optimization.

For selfies, the Z70 Ultra leverages advanced Nanometer-Level High-Transparency Materials, Independent Pixel Driving Technology, and Invisible Driving Circuit Technology to significantly enhance light transmission through the Under Display Camera. This ensures flawless concealment of the under-display lens in all scenarios. The 16MP Front Camera, coupled with a large f/2.0 aperture and AI Clear Algorithm 7.0, improves preview and shooting results by 30%, delivering sharper, more stable video calls and enhanced overall selfie performance.

Nubia says it is both IP68-rated for submersion in water, and IP69-rated for heated and pressurized water, so if you accidentally put it in the laundry it should survive. I wasn’t brave enough to put this claim to the test. The phone has a whopping 6,150mAh battery and it lasts forever. I averaged two to three days on a single charge when I wasn’t playing games, and at least a day and a half when I pushed it. It has an 80W fast charger that takes it from 4% to 100% in under 20 minutes.

The Nubia Z70 Ultra comes in gold, black, and a dreamy starry night colorway. They all have the same specs, so it is really a matter of color choice. The base model has 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage for $729, and it goes up to 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage for $949. They all feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite mobile platform SOC and that monster 6,150mAh battery, so you get your money’s worth either way.
