SteamOS expands to other gaming handhelds with the Lenovo Legion Go S

SteamOS is slowly becoming an alternative to Windows for handheld gaming devices. After launching the Steam Deck with SteamOS, its own operating system, Valve is now partnering with third-party manufacturers so that they can release gaming handhelds with SteamOS support.

On Tuesday, Lenovo unveiled the Legion Go S at CES 2025. Unlike its predecessor, the Legion Go, this gaming handheld has a more traditional form-factor with a large, eight-inch display surrounded by controllers on each side of the screen. The detachable controllers and the kickstand at the back of the device are gone.

Eventually, Lenovo says the Go 2 will feature a few notable improvements from its prior handheld gaming devices. The screen will move from an 8-inch LCD panel that’s seen on the Go S systems to an 8.8-inch OLED display (matching the same size as 2023’s original Go), the body will sport a new finish and the device will have a bigger battery than the original Go.

Featuring cloud saves that mean a seamless transition between PC gaming and handheld, Remote Play that streams games to the device from a PC, full Steam Store and Steam Library access, the Lenovo Legion Go S (8”, 1) Powered by SteamOS is a big step forward in freedom of choice for gamers who are looking for an OS that is optimized for handheld gaming.

The sides of the Lenovo Legion Go S are smooth and rounded, contouring nicely in the hand, and the hatched texture on the grips of the device will probably help prevent accidental drops. The rear side of those grips hides the only “extra” buttons on the device, two paddle-like buttons, one on either side of the device. That’s a stark contrast from the Lenovo Legion Go, which had a ton of extra buttons and dials, as the removable controllers were supposed to be used as a stand-in for a mouse.

That handheld will be the 1.6-pound Lenovo Legion Go S, a new and improved version of the company’s eight-inch handheld that ditches the Nintendo Switch-like detachable gamepads and kickstand for a lighter and more traditional design, with a sculpted grip that felt supremely comfortable in my hands.

But the Windows version shipping in January will cost $729.99, with 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. In May, the true experiment will begin when gamers can pick between a $499.99 SteamOS version with 16GB / 512GB, a $599.99 Windows version with 16GB / 1TB, or the Steam Deck and Steam Deck OLED at $399 and $549, respectively.
