Xiaomi Buds 5 Pro are the first to deliver on Qualcomm’s promise of Wi-Fi earbuds

The Buds 5 Pro were announced in China on Thursday, alongside the 15 Ultra phone, which is also launching in Europe. They come in two versions: a regular Bluetooth model, and a Wi-Fi version that uses Qualcomm’s Expanded Personal Area Network (XPAN) tech to deliver 96kHz/24bit lossless audio at a bandwidth of up to 4.2Mbps, superior to anything you can get over Bluetooth.

The only difference on the Wi-Fi version of the Buds 5 Pro is Direct Wi-Fi connectivity with smartphones through the use of Snapdragon Sound and Qualcomm XPAN audio technologies. You’ll also be able to walk away from your phone without the connection deteriorating, so long as you stay within the range of your Wi-Fi network.

The Harman Golden Ear Team master-tuned the pair of earbuds, and they offer up to 55dB hybrid active noise cancellation. The 10-hour battery life on the buds (with up to 40 including the case) is better than the eight hours of the Bluetooth model, backing up Qualcomm’s claim that it can deliver lossless Wi-Fi audio at the same power consumption as Bluetooth.

Audio comes from a triple-driver system, with an 11mm main driver backed up by a PZT tweeter and planar driver. There’s support for active noise cancellation, and an array of AI features built-in including call recording, transcription, and translation.

The Xiaomi Buds 5 Pro come with a traditional in-ear design and are equipped with a dual amplifier and triple driver system including 11mm titanium-plated woofers alongside 10mm ceramic tweeters. The earphones support audio tuned by Harman AudioEFX and offer Spatial audio experience with dynamic head tracking. They are said to support up to 55dB ANC and up to 100dB call noise reduction. The TWS earphones have in-ear detection features as well as touch controls.

Xiaomi confirms that the latest Buds 5 Pro earphones support Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity and offer AAC, SBC, aptX Lossless, and aptX Adaptive LC3 audio codec support. Meanwhile, the Wi-Fi variant supports aptX Adaptive 4.2M codec, which is said to offer up to 4.2Mbps lossless audio transmission. The earphones are IP54 rated for dust and splash resistance.
