Sony Inzone Buds Review: Excellent audio quality marred by limited connectivity
The Sony INZONE Buds are wireless earbuds designed with gaming use in mind. Sony have manufactured a number of gaming headsets under the INZONE name, but this is the first pair of earbuds they’ve released as part of the line. They feature active noise cancelling (ANC) and spatial sound technologies and a purported 12-hour battery life.
While they use the same drivers as the Sony WF1000-XM5 Truly Wireless, the manufacturer claims they have a unique design that reduces ear contact for a more comfortable fit. They also support Bluetooth via LE audio and use the LC3 codec for lower energy and lower bandwidth audio data transmission.

The Sony Inzone Buds come in a sturdy, magnetically-sealed, charging case, which features a pairing button, a rear USB-C charging port, and an LED light that signifies paring and battery life. The case is quite wide, however, so you may struggle to easily put it in your pocket for on-the-go use. Alongside the earbuds themselves, the Sony Inzones come with a USB-C 2.4GHz dongle – which features a switch with two settings that separate PS5 and mobile use from PC – six additional earbud tips of varying sizes, and a USB-C cable for charging.
Similarly, the PlayStation Pulse Explore earbuds come in a charging case, with an LED light signifier and three additional tips – but we do wish it had more with varying sizes. However, while the Sony Inzone’s aren’t overly pocket-friendly, the Pulse Explore buds are chunky but not too much so. During testing, we found they could fit inside a PlayStation Portal case, allowing for convenient portability.

By default, the sides of the earbuds feature built-in touch controls for playback, to toggle noise-cancellation, and to adjust the volume. The controls can also be remapped using the PC-based Inzone Hub software.
As you can see from the frequency response graph, the INZONE Buds have a very close to neutral sound profile except for some peaks in the highs. As we mentioned above, we were pleased with the sound quality overall.
I might even consider these over my regular gaming headset because of how good the audio quality is. However, something to keep in mind is that the spatial sound on the INZONE Buds is lacking, especially when compared to headphones. You will have better spatial awareness with similarly priced gaming headphones. Earphones typically have a disadvantage in this department against headphones, so keep that in mind if you require excellent spatial awareness in the games you play. The built-in microphone on the earphones was also very clear during our testing, however, we found that it did pick up a lot of background chatter.
