Oppo’s new foldable phone is as thin as its USB-C port

Oppo is billing its upcoming Find N5 (it will likely be the OnePlus Open 2 when it hits the US market) as the world’s thinnest foldable. That title currently belongs to the Magic V3 from Honor, which sits at just 4.35 mm unfolded. For comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Pixel 9 Pro Fold both top 5 mm unfolded.

Oppo and OnePlus are not only focusing on thinness with their upcoming flagship foldable. The Find N5/OnePlus Open 2 will also feature superior IP certification. In a separate Weibo post, Yibao revealed the Find N5 will carry an IPX8 and IPX9 certification, making it the only foldable to offer protection against high temperature and pressure water jets.

All current foldables sport limited dust or liquid ingress protection. The OnePlus Open is IPX4-rated, while the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is IPX8-certified. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 has a superior IP48 rating, which allows it to provide limited dust ingress protection as well.

Company product manager Zhou Yibao shared images of the device in a social media post on Weibo, saying the thinness wasn’t limited by the device, but by the charging port. He didn’t reveal the actual size but offered several comparisons. In one image, the unfolded phone seems to sit slightly smaller than a stack of four credit cards. In another, it looks about half the depth of an iPhone. In a third, it’s close to two Chinese Yuan coins. A similar “anything-but-the-metric-system” video from last week showed the phone being the same as exactly 39 sticky notes.

The phone is so sleek, that there’s almost no room on either side of the USB-C port (2.6 mm itself). Given that USB-C is now the standard, you have to wonder if it’s even possible to produce a thinner device as there’s not much else to remove. It’s likely the phone will have a sizable camera bump, but this is still a very impressive device overall. If the camera quality and battery life are comparable, this should be some decent competition for the other foldables on the market.
